Tears of Blood

Author Introduction: I would not call myself a writer. Or a poet. What I am is, creatively inclined. My education has nothing to do with it. It's just programmed in my genetic code. I love to read. Mostly classics and poetry. I love music. Art. Cinema. Nature. I blog about my world at http://www.medhakapoor.blogspot.in

‘Hurry up, Raju! Run or those dogs will be upon us in minutes!’

I watched as Raju struggled to move with his pot belly impending him, wheezing and coughing on the way. I was a hundred meters ahead of him and before me stood the mighty trees of the Chiranjeevi forest. We were being chased by a group of policemen for escaping from prison and had just been able to lose them through some really quick thinking on my part. I knew they would never follow us into the forest, at least not at night. They were a bunch of superstitious fools who believed it to be haunted. Well, haunted or not, it was the only place for us to escape from the jaws of prison life.

The forest was cold, dark and damp. The flashlights we were holding were of little use, scarcely illuminating the space around us, thick with foliage as it was. The sound of leaves crumpling below our feet hung in the night air like a lone beacon of light on a stranded shore. And I was afraid that it would attract the wrath of wild animals.

‘Raju, I believe we’ve made a grave mistake, we can’t spend the night in this place…it may be full of wild animals!’

He looked at me with a grim expression, before turning away and regarding the darkness, ‘There is a way, Shyam…I’ve been in this forest before and I know of an old fort, I’ve seen it as a child, I think I can lead us to it…we’ll be safe from the animals there…’

‘Alright, is it far?’, I asked him.

‘It is in a clearing at the heart of the forest. But it is our best chance’.

‘Hmm. Let’s go then’.

Raju nodded and studied our surroundings for five minutes before starting down a path…
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

It has been years since I’ve seen the fort of Rudrapratapa. It used to be our favorite spot for playing hide-and-seek as children, with its plethora of rooms of all shapes and sizes and the passages set out like a maze. One could easily get lost there. Our elders would often warn us against going to the fort. Apparently, it had been cursed by a witch. They would try and scare us with various stories but it never deterred our free, adventurous spirits.

‘Where is your god-damned fort Raju? I’m exhausted from all this trekking in the forest…’

‘Here, here; just beyond these trees…Can you make out the outline from here? Look there…’

And there it was, looking melancholy and desolate against the silver moonlight. All its past glory turned into just bricks and stones. How time ruins things! Not a sound to be heard except the chirping of the crickets. I could see an own perched atop a tree near its boundary wall. Its yellow eyes shone at us menacingly. I flinched.

‘How do we get in?’

‘Look for an opening in the wall…there should be a crevice wide enough to let us get in…’

‘Bats! Yikes!’, Shyam shouted, ducking and waving his arms around. Ah, the perils of spending a night in the wilderness. I thought we had had enough of crazy nights in the prison.

Fifteen minutes later, we are inside the fort. It’s much cooler than outside and we are shivering slightly. I feel uneasy, I have a feeling we’re not alone in this place. But then, the fort is huge enough to grant refuge to an army of hundreds.

‘Shyam, let us just find a nice spot and hide till the morning. I’m very tired.’

But Shyam would not pay any attention to me; he was like a man possessed! He ran from room to room, admiring the splendor of the place while the thief inside him looked for items to pick up.

‘A couple of rare antique items from this place, Raju, and we’ll be millionaires! Just think about it!’

‘Don’t be stupid! If there was anything of value here, it wouldn’t be laying open for scavengers like us!’

‘Hey! Look! Look here!’

Shyam turned my attention to a heavily ornamented door. It was studded with gems arranged in an intricate design. I couldn’t recall having seen anything like this here before.

‘I’m sure there’s something of value inside! But this big, fat lock! Do something about it, Raju, my mastermind!’

Wordlessly, I got down on my knees and examined the lock. It looked simple enough; just some careful ministrations with my master key and it would give away. Yet, my hands trembled as I inserted the key in the hole. It felt as if there was someone on the other side of the door, waiting to be set free…
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

‘Holy Cow! Look at the size of this room! And it’s loaded with stuff! We’ve hit the jackpot, my friend!’

The room was impressive! It was full of caskets and cupboards and drawers.

The walls were adorned with paintings. There were desks, chairs and a huge bed. All made of expensive mahogany, I presumed. We were going to be rich! No more petty thievery for the rest of our lives! The only problem was, Raju wasn’t willing to share any of my enthusiasm. He was silent and subdued, transfixed to a spot near the door. Maybe, he’s scared, foraging in the dark like this. Hah! What a child!

‘Oi, come over here, you go and check out the other side of the room, I’ll look here…’

‘Okay…alright…’

I looked on as Raju gingerly walked to an almirah, stumbling over a couple of caskets on his way.

I sigh and turn my attention towards a painting on the wall. The frame seems to be made of gold. It is a huge piece of art, a life-sized portrait of a reclining woman. I trace her figure with the light of my torch. She’s draped in a blood red saree, snugly fitted to her voluptuous figure, curly black tresses, full lips, pierced nose, eyes…eyes? I froze in shock as I realized that her eyes were missing! Their place was marked by two blotches of red, as if the eyes had been slashed off. What a weird painting! Those kings must have been crazy!

‘Shyam…’ somebody whispers.

‘What, Raju?’ I turned to speak, but he wasn’t there. ‘Raju?’I swung around to the other side but there was no one. I turned back to the painting and was immersed in complete darkness. The batteries had died. Shit. Okay, calm down, just walk towards the entrance. There was a still a glimmer of moonlight coming through. I could just focus on it and it would guide me to the door. I start walking, carefully. I realized that I was sweating. The darkness that surrounded me was oppressive. It felt like it was suffocating me. Somehow, I could not get the image of that blood stained face out of my mind.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

People say that when you are deprived of the use of one or more senses, the other remaining ones become sharper. Standing in this room with only a dim source of illumination, I became aware of my surroundings in a most unique manner. I observed the smells and the variations of temperature. My mind was just not burglary today. I felt myself being drawn to a cold corner that smelled, quite unmistakably, of blood. The metallic, nauseating smell of congealed human blood. Could somebody have dumped a dead body here? I wonder as I walk towards the source of the odor. I'm very close to the spot, the smell is so strong that it makes me want to throw up. The air surrounding me is perfectly still and chilly. I can feel goosebumps on my flesh. Footsteps! I hear footsteps. Thud thud thud thud thud. A dull, rhythmic motion. We are not alone here. Someone is coming to get me. Maybe its the murderer! What should I do? I take a confused step forward and feel my foot strike against something coarse and ice-cold. I freeze. Oh my god, its flesh! It’s human flesh! 'Shyaaam! SHYAAM! Where are you? Get the fuck here immediately!'

Trembling, I move my flashlight to get a look at the body but there is nothing there. I glance around, move back and forth but there's no sign of a body. Cold fear grips my spine and I turn away, ready to run just as a hand shoots out of nowhere and grabs my foot. 'SHYAAM!!Help me! SHYAAMMM!'. I can feel its rugged claws biting into my skin. I can't free myself from its grip. I scream as another hand grabs the other foot, completely immobilizing me. It’s dragging me towards itself.

Suddenly, I receive a slap to my face and the hands that gripped my feet disappear.

'What on earth is wrong with you Raju? You're screaming like a madman!'

'Oh Shyam! Thank god you are here! Lets get out of here. I beg you. Please, let’s just go.'

'Why? Why should we go?'

'Because this place is haunted Shyam! There is a ghost here! I felt it! It was gripping me! I couldn't move! It was gripping my feet! Both my feet!'

'What nonsense, Raju! There is no such thing as ghosts! You must have been dreaming! Now give me your flashlight and let us see what is there to take!'
I had never felt so angry with Shyam before. How could he disregard my opinions this way? Does he take me to be a fool? I fumed.

'Shyam, I want to go. You have no right to talk to me in this manner. What do you think of yourself? '

'Raju, please just calm down. There are no ghosts here, its just your mind playing tricks.'

........................................................................................................................................................................

I could not understand why Raju was being so irrational. Sure, the place is scary, but then, any place would be so in the darkness. And ghosts? He couldn't be this foolish. And then it struck me! Raju is playing a game with me. He wants me out of here so that all the goods can be his! That old fox! I knew I could never trust a man like him!

'Shyam, will you listen to me?!' Raju shouted, grabbing my arm.

'No, you listen to me, Raju! You leave if you want to! I'm not moving!'. I pushed him away.

'I will not leave you alone to die and you will listen to me!', he was grabbing me again.

'Is that what it is, huh? I can see right through your stupid plans, Raju. You want all the riches to yourself and so you're inventing all this nonsense! You can easily trace this place in the morning and can come conveniently to claim the stuff for yourself!' It was my turn to grab him by the collar.

'How dare you! You insolent, greedy man! How dare you!' His knee meets my stomach and I double up in pain. My hands immediately fly to his neck. I wanted to squeeze the air out of the slimy bastard but he had his hands on my arms, restraining me. Damn, he was strong. I fly into a rage and attack his face with my hands. I dig my nails in his eyeballs and scratch; I scratch and claw at them till I can feel his blood dripping down my fingers. He had started howling. Haha! No one messes with me! I step back to let him moan in agony.

Before I knew it, he came charging at me like a bull, head first, right into my gut. I stumble backwards with the force of the blow and fall, from the feel of it, in an open casket. I grab the sides and try to get up but this monster placed the lid over me. I could barely move my arms but used all my strength to beat against the top. It would not budge. It was too heavy. I'm going to die here. God please. I don't want to die. I was beating on the lid with everything I had. My breath came in gasps and shudders. I was using whatever air there was in my lungs to shout to Raju to open this thing. But it just wouldn't move. Darkness, the darkness is coming to get me. It has won. I could hear the mad laughter of a woman and I knew it is her.

........................................................................................................................................................................

The pain in my eyes is unbearable. I am bleeding tears of blood. I could barely move so I settled myself on the casket. Beneath me I could still hear the mad screams and knocks of Shyam, asking me to let him out. I ignored them. He could die there and be eaten up by rats and rot in hell forever as far as I was concerned. How could he do this to me? He is a sick man! My eyes! Oh my eyes! I sit there nursing my precious eyes, blood all over my face. I try opening them as the pain subsides but can hardly see anything. Everything is red. I weep more tears.

And then I see her. An apparition, a ghost, a ghoul, a witch or a goddess. I do not know what she is. Skin a sickly green color; she is standing in front of me, wearing a red saree over an emaciated frame. She smells of rotting flesh and blood. Her hair hangs down loose over her bosom and her face is as bloodshot as mine. But the most horrific part, she had had her eyes gouged out! And in spite of it all, she bared her bloody teeth at me and laughed. I had never seen or heard anything this horrible and vindictive. Her laughter shredded my soul in pieces and suddenly I wish I hadn't ever hurt Shyam. She kneels forward and grabs both my feet with her claw like hands, pulling me down slowly from the casket. Despite her skeletal frame, she is stronger than me. I fall on my back and my head hits against the edge of the casket. I feel dizzy and light-headed. I didn't have the power to scream or struggle, fear had stupefied me. I just stare at her terrible form, waiting for the torture that I knew was coming but she just laughed and laughed. Her voice echoed and the walls laughed with her. I could not take it any more and let myself drift away into oblivion...

Edition 6 - The Judgment Post by Medha Kapoor

Sorry to keep you waiting for so long.

Judging is a tough task! One would think that setting concrete guidelines and making use of a known story would have made it easier to compare the entries, but the sheer creativity of the participants in terms of interpreting the exercise surprised me. I would, firstly, like to applaud all the the participants for attempting to adopt the conflict-resolver technique in the story. The truth is, I was/am not to clear on the differences in the different opening styles either and every attempt brings us one step closer to nailing it. Also, maybe this wasn't the perfect opening style for this particular tale. In hind sight, the mystifier or puzzler would have worked better. Nevertheless, the correct application of conflict-resolver to this particular exercise left me mystified and puzzled.

The other criteria was creating a contemporary setting for the classic tale, keeping the plot intact. Here, I was amazed by the creativity the participants brought to the table! All the permutations and combinations were taken care of, complete with a gender interchange and chemical treatment for the magical tranformation of Beast. They were all a treat to read, and, hence, a horror when it came to judging. Going by intuition alone wasn't helping so I had to employ a process in which I specified three criteria: opening, narration and plot and assigned points on a scale of one to three to each entry.

Deepa and Jayashree's entries, though among the top scorers, had to be eliminated to avoid redundancy as agreed to in the format of the workshop. Following which, The Fool, Nabanita Dhar and Mixi made it to the top of the list. A brief feedback on the entries:

Deepa Duraiswamy: Faltered at the opening, but brilliant narration and stuck to the plot.

Jayashree Srivatsan: Brought in mythical characters and kept the fairy tale element alive. The narration was splendid.

The Fool: Established conflict in the opening, narration was great with smooth transitions between the two POVs, stuck to the plot too, but failed to give it a contemporary setting.

Nabanita Dhar: Established conflict in the opening, wonderful narration, experimented a little with the plot but maintained the essence.

Mixi: Failed with the opening, but did justice to the plot and narrated it nicely.

Snuffles Jay: Stuck to the plot in a creative manner, showed the physical transformation of Beast without using magic.

Animesh Mishra: Ingenuity shown with the gender interchange. However, missed the guidelines on alternating POV and opening style.

Harshal Gupta: Developed a good plot in contemporary setting, used magic creatively.

Sanhita Baruah: Nice narration, gave a new angle to the story of Beauty and the Beast.

Without much ado, over to TF, Naba and Mixi to come up with an exciting challenge for the next edition. Congrats to the winners! And also, congrats to everybody who participated! It was an enjoyable exercise.

Story:

06:05, 01/02/13

Samir shivered in the early morning chill. It was barely five minutes past six and it had taken him a humunguos effort to relinquish the warmth of his bed for a jog. Not that he needed the exercise. Or wanted it. The neighbour's teen-aged daughter had started getting insecure about her figure and he was more than ready to lend a helping hand.
'Late again', he muttered as he fixed his hair using a parked car's side mirror. 'Sexy eyes', he crooned, looking into his reflection. 'Hmmm. Handsome face', he smiled, moving back a few paces. 'Strong should...what the hell!!', something in the reflection had sent shivers down his spine. He spun around to spot the source of the horror and gasped. There, behind the car, in the narrow lane between the buildings of the compound, hung, tangled in a mesh of wires, the body of a young girl, covered in blood.
Samir stood transfixed, unable to comprehend the scene before him. Who could've done this? It was one of the most peaceful, residential areas of the town. What should he do? Calling the cops meant dealing with questions and possible accusations. But why should he be scared? He looked at the face of the young girl. The eyes, still open, looked startled, as if she too was surprised to find herself in a position like this. Dangling from a set of wires at six in the morning. On a Sunday.
Samir snapped out of his daze. He decided he shouldn't be seen in the company of a dead body so early in the morning. He was just a regular jogger, trying to score the neighbour's daughter. Satisfied with his decision, he turned on his heel and jogged away. Had he waited a few minutes he would have earned himself some interesting company.
The door of the balcony of one of the flats on the seventh floor swung open and a middle-aged man stepped out, looking bewildered. He cut a handsome figure of masculinity except for the red ladies' gown that he was wearing. He stood puzzled for a few minutes, trying to remember why he was so dressed. But a trail of blood on the floor caught his attention. He followed it to the edge of the railing, grabbed the handrail firmly, peeped down gingerly and felt the ground beneath his feet give away. The earth trembled, the sky erupted with bolts of lightning and the Sun spewed fire as Mr.Sibal let out a horrified, ear-splitting scream.
15:35, 31/01/13 (The day before.)
Kaira was having an unusually dull day at work. Two hours past lunch time and there had not been a single disgruntled tourist complaining about the facilities at the hotel, no absconding rich young lovers registering under false IDs or nubile 'models' showing up for interviews. Even her co-workers at the Concierge had kept their distance, only stealing short glances of her stocking-clad legs every now and then. She let out a small sigh and checked her phone for messages. A mischievous smile played across her well-glossed lips. Kicking off her stilletoes, she reclined back in the soothing leather of her chair, shook the loose strands of her curls out of her eyes, softly chuckling to herself as she read the conversation she had had with her best friend, Ishita. She was glad to be meeting her in the evening. Kaira and Ishita had been best friends since school but had gotten out of touch once they joined college in different parts of the country. But the weird-haired sisters of Fate conspired to land them their first jobs in the same city and there they were, innocently obeying the commands of destiny. The consulting company Ishita worked for was only minutes away from Kaira's seven-star fancy hotel workplace.
16:30, 31/01/13
The buzzing of her cell phone was driving Ishita crazy. A friend of hers had installed this instant messaging app on her chic smartphone and the pings just won't stop. But as every other gizmo owner out there, she couldn't muster the courage to expunge the perpetrator of her solace and be done with it, because, well, the world would collapse if she did not update people with the events of her day
'Ishita! That report should've reached me fifteen minutes back!', the short, squawky figure who was paid to boss around all the younger, smarter people was shouting at her.
'Sir, do you mind viewing it on my laptop instead? There seems to be some trouble with the network connections', she said as she got up, cradling the laptop in well-manicured hands. He considered telling her off for being such a technologically challenged 'girl' but decided against it as he observed her demure figure in colorful salwar-kameez walk towards her.
Ishita knew she had gotten herself into a lot of trouble. She had accidentally let spyware seep into her system while browsing certain websites. She was now afraid for the sensitive data that was stored on her hard disk.
Once back at her desk, she picked up her phone and dialed a number.
'Mr. Sibal! Hope I'm not disturbing you. Listen! I have a BIG problem. Okay...Umm...Can you come over in the evening? Thanks. Bye.'
She heaved a huge sigh of relief as she disconnected the call. Mr.Sibal was a charming, dynamic and highly resourceful man she'd come across in the in the cafe she frequented. He was around fifty, well groomed and well spoken. Theirs was a peculiar friendship. It had all started with an aqua colored fizzy drink that Mr. Sibal decided to try out in the cafe. On an impulse, she had called out,'Don't have that! Tastes like mouthwash!'. She was seated alone on a table adjacent to his. Their eyes met and they burst out laughing. 'Thank you! I think I've had my share of that this morning!', he laughed. They had ended up having a lot of aqua blue since then, just for the heck of it.
There were fifteen texts from Kaira, all concerning their plans for the evening. 'Paranoid woman!', she thought and tested her informing about the newest inclusion to their guest list. It was going to be another fun-filled Saturday evening with two of her closest friends, she mused.
20:30, 31/01/13
At the corner of the street was a shady looking store, brightly lid from the inside but very inconspicuous on the outside. It wasn't usually crowded, except for the evenings and today, being a Saturday, there was a steady stream of customers making trips to and from the store, some in cycles. As Kaira walked to the store in her fitted black dress, several hands turned to stare, many even got ready for the expected enquiry or request that could be the reason for this beautiful lady's walk towards them. Instead, she maneuvered her way to the counter and caught the attention of the vendor. 'One Smirnoff and one bottle of Chivas Regal, please', she instructed to the vendor.
On the outside, Kaira was the perfect specimen of a seductive, confident female. Inside, Kaira was seething. Anger. Jealousy. Frustration. She could not stand another evening of Mr. Sibal trying to lure Ishita away from her. The world mistook him as a polished, sophisticated man whereas he was just another twisted man vying to siphon love and affection out of her beloved Ishita. Tonight, she was going too put an end to it all. The chemical she'd laced her nail paint with, when combined with alcohol would burn a hole in his vital organs, causing him to bleed out, but slowly. Slow enough for him to take his leave and walk to the car and drive it out on the road and...poof! Kaira smiled haughtily as she observed the sheen of the painted nails under a streetlight.
21:30, 31/01/13
Laughter emanated from the hall of Ishita's seventh floor apartment. Mr. Sibal had arrived half an hour back and having solved her issue, was showing her funny cat videos on Youtube.
Ishita always had a great time with Mr. Sibal.
'You'll stay for dinner, right?', she asked, looking into his warm, brown eyes.
'Well, I'd love to. But I think the missus misses me', he winked back.
'Stay na! Even Kaira is coming over!', insisted Ishita.
Mr. Sibal's smile faded as soon as he heard her name. Kaira Kaira Kaira. Why was Ishita so blind as to not see the truth about Kaira? They say that love is blind, but, surely, Ishita could not be in love with Kaira, could she? Was she? Her too?
He was busy contemplating this mystery with a constipated look on his face when the doorbell rang and Ishita jumped to her feet and ran to get the door.
'Hi Sweetie!'
'Hello!!'
And so went the customary 'girlie' welcome with hugs and kisses.
Mr. Sibal got up to shake hands with Kaira and they stood regarding each other for a while, like opponents before a boxing bout as Ishita pranced away to the kitchen to keep the bottles.
'Hey! Ishita! Babe! Let's have a drink first!', Kaira called out to her.
'Whisky or Vodka? What's your poison?', she purred to Mr. Sibal, proceeding to walk to the kitchen.
'I won't drink, thank you', he replied back softly.
01:00, 01/02/13
'Poison, you're poison running through my veins...Poison, I don't wanna break these chains...Poison...'- blared on the music system as Ishita and Kaira danced, pretending to be rockstars. The girls had drunk themselves silly over the course of one hour and Mr. Sibal could not, in any circumstance, leave Ishita alone with Kaira. He was sitting on an armchair, watching them enjoy themselves while sweat leaked through every orifice of his body. The back pocket of his jeans vibrated with the announcement of a call. His stomach did a double leap as he saw the name on the screen.
'Shhhhhh! Quiet! It's my wife!', he screamed.
'Hello! Yes. Uhhh. I'm really sorry honey, I'm at Vikram's place, his father is unwell...', heart hammering in his ribcage, he made a mental note to explain to Vikram  about his father's many maladies.
Kaira's rage deepened as she saw him lie outright to his wife without a trace of guilt.
'Hahahahaha! Look at you stutter! I wonder who wears he pants in your house! Hahaha!', laughed Kaira, mocking eyes riveted to his.
Mr. Sibal ignored her and instead turned his attention to Ishita who was on her way to make another drink for herself.
'Good god! Enough already, Ishita! How much will you drink?'
'Hah! Okay! Well! I will not drink any more if you wear that gown of mine and give us a dance! Come on! Haha!', Ishita grabbed his arm and started pulling him out of the armchair.
'What nonsense! Ishita!', he exclaimed.
Kaira sensed an opportunity here.
'Hey! Come on! Let me fix YOU a drink instead!', she hurried over to the table to get the business done.I
Ishita had already pushed the gown over his neck and was proceeding to get his arms in.
Kaira was cat-walking towards him, her eyes on fire, firmly gripping the glass in her hand.
'Come on, drink', she cooed, her arm extending the drink to his lips.
'Drink!', chanted Ishita.
Mr. Sibal gazed at the two pairs of eyes that were staring at him and then at the glass that was being offered to him. But his hands refused to budge.
'Oh! What the hell', exclaimed Ishita as she snatched the drink from Kaira's hand and gulped it down in one go.
Kaira screamed.
Ishita was astonished.
Mr. Sibal screamed as realization hit him.
Kaira grabbed a vase from the table nearby and hit him with it. She didn't wait for him to fall unconscious before turning her head to Ishita and forcing two fingers down her throat.
'Puke Ishita! Puke!', she shouted.
Gagging, Ishita struggled to push Kaira away from her, struggled to comprehend what had just occurred.
'Puke!'
Ishita staggered to her feet. Kaira won't relinquish her hold.
'Puke!'
Ishita moved backward, tears streaming down her cheeks. Tears streaming down Kaira's cheeks.
'Puke!'
Ishita looked into Kaira's desperate face. Things were starting to get very blurry. This can't be just alcohol. She looked at the blood on Mr. Sibal's temple. What was happening? She felt a warm liquid gurgle and churn inside her. They were out in the balcony. She puked on the white marble floor. Red. Kaira was howling. The moon was full and high in the sky. But the night was foggy. Everything was blurred. Kaira was silent now. The wind was icy cold. Ishita's head swam as her eyes drooped. Kaira put her arms around her and held her as they leaned against the railing.
In one swift move, Kaira lifted her and threw her off the balcony.

A Rush of Blood to the Head

Author: Medha Kapoor

Story:
It is a warm morning in the middle of September. I am lying on the floor, watching the rays of the sun seep in through the window, lifting and turning and twirling the tiny little particles it came upon…
‘Mr. Brawlerrr’ rang a sing-song voice. ‘What?’ I growl, turning to look at the person interrupting my reverie. It’s Vincent, the most twisted white piece of shit you’d ever come across. ‘You have a visitor, sir’, he leers, the sides of his mouth twitching just a bit.

I scramble to my feet and walk to the door, holding up my hands so he could cuff me. I could've just as easily wrapped them around that thin neck of his and cracked it into two but I was just not in the mood for that today. Instead, I submissively walk down the dark corridor, glancing at the cells that came across the way, housing the most notoriously infamous residents of the Arlington State Penitentiary.
..
An elderly woman, wearing a long shabby cardigan over an equally shapeless dress stood waiting for me at the counter.
'...Billy, my child! I'm so glad to see you...' the showers of love started as soon as I place the receiver on my ear. ‘As good as ever grandma! Shouldn't have bothered to come in your condition and all…'
'How could I've not? It's your special day after all, ain’t it?' She had baked me a cake. It had my favourite icing too. I thanked her and chatted with her till that leech came to take me back.
‘And what do we have here?’ he said, snatching the box out of my hand. Bad move. Towering over his menial 5'8", I drove my elbows in the back of his head. This got us into a scuffle right in the middle of the hallway, which was a good thing for me as it got us the attention of the supervisor.
'The hell is goin' on there? Vincent give that homo bastard his lunch box and get him out of here!'
Oh, and Vincent, get yourself some brains too, piece of white refuse.
..
'What's for dessert Billy? Where that cake of yours go?'
‘Bet it’s got weed in it'
‘You can't get that kind of shit past those sensors, you moron'

My buddies in prison, Luke, Shaq and Steve had got themselves all worked up about the contents of my package at lunch time. Even the other inmates were looking at us curiously.
'There's none left fellas. Big billy got a big stomach'.
I got up to keep my plate at the sink, but found Bruce retching in it.

'You carrying my baby Bruce? aww'.
My cronies jeered and laughed as I gave Bruce's behind a nice spank.
Bruce was my bitch in here. When I first heard he was HIV positive too, I assumed he was homo. But when he turned down all advances made by me, I just had to take him by force. The inmates helped me assault him, better him than them, they figured.
..
From five to seven in the evening, the inmates were hauled for specialized programmes like religious service, gym, carpentry and so on. Two hours of recreation time to help us channelize our rage and reach to our inner self and all the bull-crap these psychologists dream up. I was directed to the library along with my gang. My decision to spend recreation time in the library had come as a shocker to all, apparently I was the only dangerously evil mass murderer who was interested in reading. But then again, I was not always bad. I was once this famous boxer competing for the state heavyweight title. I got into a brawl with a group of men in a bar and ended up killing three of them. I can't explain how I became this man. It's just that sometimes I get so angry. Like that green monster you see in the movies.
'Hey look Billy, we got you your play thing', the prison guard smirked throwing Bruce through the door of the library. Bruce normally went to the gym but looking at the condition he was in today, I was not surprised to find him in a place that did not require lifting iron. He looked at me with hostility and wandered off to a corner. To think that this wuss of a man, who couldn't even keep his hole protected in what were probably the last days of his sorry life, killed his wife by smashing her head in with a baseball bat is ridiculous. I'm sure someone's paid a hell of a lot of money to keep him in here. Anyway, that's not for me to speculate. Who's to say what's right and what's wrong. Life isn't fair. I turned to my business.
‘It was no cake, you shit-heads’, I whispered to my men once I was sure Bruce and the guard were out of earshot. ‘And for the record, she wasn’t my grandma either’. Steve gave me a meaningful look as Luke and Shaq continued to look demented.

‘Whaddaya mean she wasn’t your-‘
‘Shut the fuck up Luke and listen to me’, I glanced around the library to make sure nobody was eavesdropping on us before feeding them the details. We had no plans of rotting on in this hell hole, which was why we had been working on an escape route- a tunnel in the library washroom since the past four months. It had all started when poop got stuck in one of the pipes there and the plumbers that came into repair it worked up a huge bill. Now, our Steve here is a very handy man. When he volunteered to fix the system the next time it broke down, the guards agreed to it without a question. After all, he was white and had always managed to stay in their good books. The idea of Steve having access to plumbing tools got me thinking. I may not have a college degree but I'm smart. I got Steve to hide some tools and that’s how we started on the tunnel. Every day, inch by inch, we were advancing on our pathway to freedom. Today, I procured our final weapon. HMDT- hexamethylene triperoxide diamine, a chemical explosive made from readily available household ingredients. Once we get inside the tunnel, we would use this explosive to seal the entrance so that Vincy cannot come looking.

We made our way discreetly to the toilet and slipped inside, one by one. Steve had already unscrewed the sink and removed the tiles covering the entrance to our handiwork when I got in. Shaq came in last, locking the door behind him. Steve was already inside the tunnel and Luke was gearing to go when we heard a loud bang on the door.
‘Open up! I’m gonna throw up’
I groaned. Why did this dick have to be here today of all days?
' Fuck off!”
'Open up, you animal!'
'Get lost, whore'
'Shut up both of you!’ It was the guard. Holy crap. The situation was getting out of hand, there wasn’t enough time for all of us to escape now. I motioned to the guys to get out of the hole and set the stuff right again. I hurried to the door and threw Bruce in. He went straight to the pot and threw up. The guard went back to his couch and book. Damn! We were so close!
'What in fuck's name is going on in here?'
Bruce looked at the lopsided sink and then at our perspiring faces.

‘None of your goddamned business!’
'I know what you're trying to do'.
Fear gripped me. It is one thing to lose your secret, but to lose it to the one person you've been traumatizing for the past six months, that's self-destruction. 'Look, Bruce, don't do anything stupid or I'll beat the living hell out of you'. Aggression. ‘I am a dead man already'. Oh, right, he was getting executed in two days. 'Come with us'. He looked away. 'Bruce, come on, don't rat us out, what you gotta gain?’ He looked at me with a mixture of disgust and anger before walking away.
I spent the night in hell. Cold fear running down my spine, paralyzing me. I was expecting the guards to burst in any moment. I did not talk to Bruce again after leaving the library. I did not know what route to take, how to reason with him. I tried weighing all the choices he had. He could rattle to the guards. That would feed the hate he felt towards me and restore some of the self-respect I'd helped destroy in him. One cruel act of fate and he had got me, his tormentor, pissing his pants. Or he could use the information to blackmail me, take a swing at me- rape me, perhaps. That could be his death wish.
He could stay silent, of course, considering ratting me out won't do nothing to change his death sentence. But I had raped him. There was no way he was exiting without making me suffer. I wondered what would happen to me if they found out. Would that speed up my execution process? Or would they put me through some extensive torture ritual? The latter would suit their sadistic personalities better.
There was another option. He could join us, escape from prison with us. That could make up for the raping and stuff. But what does he have to go out for? No wife, no kids. HIV positive, gonna die in a few months anyway. Unless, there was some unfinished business. I knew he hadn't killed his wife, but whoever did, is probably still roaming out there while he suffers. Was Bruce the kind of guy who would be interested in revenge? I couldn't say for sure, he seemed to have given up on living long back.  His wife was a whore, the real one who actually gets paid in money. In all likelihood, she had given him the AIDS.
I had to incite him for revenge. But I had to choose just the precise moment and attitude for it. I had to do it just in time for the execution of my plan, to make it all the more difficult for him to resist the temptation.
..
Bruce did not as much as glance at me during breakfast next morning. He was in a world of his own, cocooned far away from his surroundings. It was driving me insane. I just couldn't guess what was going through his mind.
Once back in our cells, I hear noises coming from the direction of his cell. I rush to the door. Bruce is talking to Vincent but I can’t make out a word of what they are saying. Bruce’s tone sounds urgent. My insides turn to liquid as I see Vincent approach my cell. The sound of my thumping heart deafens me as Vincent cuffs me and enters my cell. He starts beating me with a cane. I cry out, my fists balling up in rage. But there’s no use resisting now. I am locked up in this jail for a long time now. Bastard got me in the end. Suddenly the beating stops. I look at the maniac and he spits on my face. Then he un-cuffs me and walks out the door.
'I'll send someone with your meds Bruce. Hold that shit in', he shouts as he disappears down the corridor.
What the hell was that?
..
Two hours later, in the shower, I see Fat Gibson trying to force his fat cock down Bruce's throat. His face is badly bruised and there is blood flowing down his temple. Another person is pinning him down. I stand there, unsure of what to do. What if we blokes could just kill Bruce here, suffocate him or something? Won't make no difference to them police folk, would it? Would get the execution sin off their head, if anything.

A blood curling scream breaks my thought process. Bruce bit fat Gibson! A fight breaks out but it's like a dormant monster inside Bruce has just unleashed itself. He is kicking and fisting everything within his reach. He disengages himself from his tormentors and walks away, limping. Just as he is about to reach the door, he comes towards the place I’m standing and spits on me. I am on him in no time, punching his skull as he lands blow after blow in my gut. The rage possessing me is indescribable. I am hitting to kill. But the guards rush in start caning every part of our bodies they can reach. They manage to separate us.
‘You bloody impotent man, no wonder your wife screwed around for money. I only screwed your anus, while that man out there, he’s screwed your entire fucking life’.
..
‘So you want to spend your last evening in this world in the library, eh?’ the guard chuckles as he lets Bruce in through the door. He looks at me with an indiscernible expression and walks off to a corner.
I glance around at my mates. ‘I reckon you should go and talk to him, find out what he’s thinking’, Steve says. I get up and walk towards Bruce. He’s looking at me. He’s waiting for me.
‘Can you arrange a weapon for me once we get out there?’ he whispers as soon as I get close enough.
I look at him, take in the resolve in his eyes and can’t help beaming at him. He has made the right call, after all.
‘Sure thing, Bruce’‘Can I trust you?’
‘Yes’
‘How do we go about it?’
..
He said I'm gonna buy a gun and start a war
If you can tell me something worth fighting for
Oh and I'm gonna buy this place, that's what I said
Blame it upon a rush of blood to the head
And honey all the movements you're starting to make
See me crumble and fall on my face
And I know the mistakes that I made
See it all disappear without a trace

Story: Underneath the Skin: Paradoxes of Identity

‘The township of Ur is guarded by an army of a hundred and fifty goblins,
not only are we outnumbered, their strength will be no match to ours’,
cried Daenerys to the elders of the council. Several murmured their
approval.

’So suggest we lie low, build our strength and then come back to this when
we’re ready’, Daenerys finished, looking around the group confidently.

’If wars were to be one by numbers alone, nobody would bother turning up on
the field.’

Heads turned to locate where the calm, steady voice was coming from. It was
Strider. As always, nobody had noticed him join the group, but now that he
had spoken, every eye was fixed on him.

’Seizing Ur is the only chance we have of securing a path way to the heart
of the Kingdom. I believe that if every member of our clan plays his role
and plays it well, there will be no cause for failure.’

’But even if we put numbers aside, the strength of us mortals is nothing
compared to the magical goblins!’, retorted Daenerys, determined to
convince the council,’Waging a war in thees circumstances would spell doom.
Even if we won, we would not be able to hold the seat for too long, given
our depleted army.’

’At least, you’ve conceded we may win. I consider the job half done
already. Now, to the point of strength. Yes, the goblins have many magical
powers, but they also have an unusual weakness...I observed them, lying low
at Barty’s Diner...’,and so on went Strider, describing his strategy in
detail.

Daenerys, though frustrated with the way things were going, could not hide
her amazement at the brilliance of Strider’s plan. She wracked her brains
over it, but could not find anything wrong with his analysis.
’This man is a genius!’, she found herself thinking while voting in favor
of the plan along with the others.

*’...Don’t lose your grip on dreams of the past*
*You must fight to keep them alive *
*It’s the eye of the tiger*
*It’s the thrill of the fight...’*

Meghana rolled over and turned off the alarm. It could not be six thirty
already, she complained, looking at the alarm clock with a half open eye.
Grudgingly, she got out of bed and started getting ready for work. She’d
slept for only three hours and looked like a mess. She considered taking
the day off but then decided against it. ‘Boss needs me today’, she thought.

.......................................................................................................................................................................................................................

The offices of India One Solutions Pvt Ltd were located in the IT hub of
the city. They were tall and sleek, much like any other corporate building,
nothing special there.
The door to the third floor beeped open as Meghana Arora walked in. Her
sharp heels struck the floor with a clunk noise. Immediately the
passageway to her cabin cleared.
*clunk clunk clunk*
Ties straightened, shirts were tucked in, half-eaten lunch boxes were done
away with.
*clunk clunk clunk*
Individual cries of ‘Good Morning Ma’am’ replaced the gossip and chuckles
that had filled the office five minutes back.
*clunk clunk clunk*
Meghana was thirty one, smart and good-looking. She was riding the wave of
professional success. She walked in to work with an air of dominance. Her
black skirt fitted her form snugly but her hair were neatly tied in a bun.
She was a control freak. She abhorred disorderliness and indiscipline. This
was why she was the boss. This was why she didn’t have many friends. But,
let’s get to that later.
*clunk clunk clunk*
Meghana looked at the throng of faces around her, immersed in work. Buzzing
away like drone bees, making sweet honey for her. Honey that will take her
another step up the ladder. Take her closer to her goal, her destiny...
The office floor was transformed into a stretch of sand. She was riding a
horse. Her clan, her Khalasar followed behind. She had to build an army,
she had to go to war. I am the Khaleesi, the most powerful woman in the
world and the throne is my birth right.

A smile crossed her lips as she drew this analogy and it was with this
smile that she met Arup.

Arup worked with OIS as the IT technician. He had a small cubicle at the
corner where he lazed around all day, fixing minor issues with the staff
computers, so that they could work on bigger and more intense ones. In
short, he lead a glamorless existence. Not that he deserved it, though. His
only fault was that he was born on the wrong side of the town. But after
all the struggle he had faced, he was more than happy to lead a secure life
as a part of the OIS machinery.

Arup had ‘heard’ Meghana’s arrival and was now looking at her expectantly
as she made her way to his desk.

’Good Morning, Ma’am’

’Morning, Arup. See me in my cabin in an hour.’

’Yes, sure..’, he started to say, but Meghana had started walking towards
the CEO’s  cabin. Vinod, the CEO, was another swashbuckling product of a
top Business School, like Meghana. The other advantage of his profile was
that he was the only one who could exercise some control over her.

*(Note: Khalasar and Khaleesi are terms belonging to George Martin’s ‘A
Song of Ice and Fire’. Khalasar refers to a clan of warriors and Khaleesi
is the title given to their queen. I have picked up Daenerys from the book
too.) *
.......................................................................................................................................................................................................................

’Yes, Vinod, I get your point, but with the right strategy, we could take
on this project!Give me a chance..’

’Meghana, we do not have the workforce required for something as big as
this. I had hoped you would realize that.’

’But, Vinod, give me one chance to present my plan before the Board, I..’

’Save your breath, Meghana. The Board will never agree.’

Fuming, Meghana turned around and walked back to her cabin. The CEO’s stark
disapproval of her radical new scheme had wiped off whatever admiration she
had once held for him. She had expected him to be innovative and open, but
he was just another safe-player, going by the rules in the textbook. She
sat down at her desk and looked at her laptop screen. A smile lighted up
her face. A screenshot of last night’s successful war adorned her desktop.
Strider took centrestage, mounted on his dark horse, holding the Kingdom’s
sharpest blade.
Meghana recalled how, at every obstacle, they had turned to Strider and he
had never failed them. ‘What a thinker!’, thought Meghana, ‘I bet he has
never shied away from a task, no matter how daunting.’ She started
comparing his attitude and skills with Vinod’s. ‘He is a natural leader’,
she concluded, ‘how gratifying must it be to work under him, with him.’ She
started imagining him as a top executive somewhere, making aggressive
decisions and impressing everybody with his ability. Color rose to her
cheeks...

A knock on the door snapped her right out of her reverie. It was Arup. The
air of dominance returned to her demenaour as she asked him what he wanted.

’Uhh...you’d asked me to come by, remember?’, he stated meekly.

’Oh!Right!Come on in. There seems to be a problem with the LAN connection
in here’, she told him, hastily changing the desktop background.

’Hmm...let me have a look..’, Arup went over to examine her connection.
’You look really tired today, Ma’am’, he said, glancing at the circles
beneath her eyes.

’Couldn’t catch much sleep last night’, she replied curtly.

’A hot cup of green tea with a dash of lemon in it always freshens me up!.’

’I wouldn’t even bother with the tea if all I had to do was look over some
wires’, Meghana thought to herself, yawning.

’There you go!As good as ever!’, exclaimed Arup.

Meghana gave him a thanks and a smile as he turned to go.

’Oh and one more thing Arup’, Meghana started, riding on a sudden
brainwave,’suppose there was this online role playing game...’

’MMORG, you mean?’

’Ah, yes. I was wondering if you could help me identify the identity of a
player’, she blurted, looking him in the eye.

Arup fought down a chuckle as he moved to her desk. ‘I haven’t tried this,
but I have heard of a couple of websites which may help you.’ He scribbled
down a list and handed it to her.

’Thank you. And Arup, this is strictly off the record, understood?’

’Of course, Ma’am.’

.......................................................................................................................................................................................................................

’Every person is important. It does not matter what you are, what your
position is on the leadership ladder...you all are a part of this and you
shall all do the best you possibly can.’

Meghana could have been sitting in a Corporate boardroom, listening to the
mandatory rumble of a chief executive.
But she was Daenerys, in the Castle of Ur, sitting with her people,
listening to Strider. Though she had heard this speech countless many times
before, she knew this one was different. She knew the speaker had the
ability to match the boldness of his words with sincere actions. She had
seen him accomplish that.

’I want each and every one of you to ravage the castle and pick up weapons
of your choice. I would then want you to practice with them. Remember, it
is not the number of weapons but the skill of the weapon bearer that
decides the fate of a battle. Come on now, let’s get going!’, he cried as
the crowd started to disperse.

Daenerys stood by a pillar, watching him make his way across the hall to
the dungeon. Now was the time to talk to him, but she found herself unable
to move. ‘He probably thinks I’m stupid’, Meghana conceded, doubting her
ability for the first time. She watched him disappear in the shadows and
sighed.

.......................................................................................................................................................................................................................

’Enter name of game....’, read the computer screen.
Meghana could barely conceal her excitement as she punched in the words.

*check*

’Enter ID and password’.

*check*

’Enter name of player to be tracked’.

*check*

Her heart was pounding so hard she was sure everybody on the office floor
could hear it.
’What’s wrong with you, girl!’, she chided herself.

The results loaded and she was disappointed to see no name turn up. There
was an IP address though, of the last place he had logged in from. Meghana
hurriedly noted it down. Then memorized it. But the problem was, how was
she going to track it down? She could go to Arup again, but that would hurt
her pride. Sighing, she folded the paper and put it in her drawer.
The phone rang.

’Meghana! In my office! Now!’, it was Vinod.

Meghana jumped up, straightened her jacket and was out the fdoor in a
second.

*clunk clunk clunk*

The sound woke many from slumber as others sat straighter up their chairs,
trying to look focused.

*clunk clunk clunk*

Meghana could see right through their act. ‘What a lazy bunch!’, she
thought. She saw Arup strolling down the corridor, a little ahead of her.
Taking in a deep breath, she called out to him.

’Yes Ma’am’, she turned to look at her, timid.

’Be at my cabin in twenty minutes!’, she commanded.

’Any problem with the websites?’, he ventured to mock.

An angry stare shut him up. He gulped.

’I will be there, Ma’am’.

’Phew! That was scary!’, he thought to himself as he watched her walk away.

.......................................................................................................................................................................................................................

’You must understand this is a huge risk for our company and we expect you
to deliver, Meghana’.

’Yes, Vinod, I will, most definitely’.

Meghana beamed. She was going to present her plan before the Board. She
knew what a huge step this was for her career. ‘This is my chance to prove
I can be as good as Strider’, she thought, smiling to herself.
She emerged from the Boss’ cabin looking happy and pleased with herself.
Her hurried march was now replaced by a confident stride as she crossed the
cublicles. A piece of yellow parchment caught her attention. It was stuck
on the desk of one of the employees.

’Every person is important. It doesn’t matter whether you play the violin,
the flute, the cello, or the drums, you’re still part of the orchestra.’
 -Victor Hugo

Meghana stopped dead in her tracks. The words were too familiar. Could it
be?
She guided her sweaty palms to the desktop and turned the screen around to
locate the sticker bearing it’s IP address.

’No, it can’t be!’

She glanced at the name plate and almost ran to her cabin. She rushed to
the drawer and pulled out the paper.

’Oh my god!’

She collapsed in the chair, reading and re-reading the number on the slip.

’Ma’am, may I come in?’

Meghana looked up, her face a burning scarlet.

’...Arup...would you, would you mind assisting me in a project we’re taking
on?’
